What size pergola fits over a hot tub?
Pick the pergola by the space around the tub, not the tub itself, and plan on at least 2 feet of clear room on the sides you step in from. That 2 feet is our own rule of thumb, not a code or a maker's rule.
Do this first
- Measure your tub's length and width in feet, with the cover on.
- Measure from the floor to the highest thing you'll want clear, usually the cover lifted or your head when standing in the tub.
- Write down how you get in. The sides you step in from need the most room.
- Look up your wind and snow numbers (see the lookup guide at the bottom of the ratings page).
What the standard sizes leave you
The sizes below are the ones Hanso sells. The "room left" figures are plain subtraction: pergola size minus tub size, split between two sides. The tubs are examples, not your tub. The posts take up part of that room, so the walkable space is a bit less.
| Pergola (feet) | Around a 7x7 tub | Around an 8x8 tub |
|---|---|---|
| 10x10 | 1.5 ft each side | 1 ft each side |
| 10x13 | 1.5 ft on two sides, 3 ft on the other two | 1 ft on two sides, 2.5 ft on the other two |
| 13x13 | 3 ft each side | 2.5 ft each side |
| 13x19 | 3 ft on two sides, 6 ft on the other two | 2.5 ft on two sides, 5.5 ft on the other two |
Source for the sizes: Hanso Pro+ page, read Nov 4, 2026. Hanso also lists a 10x19 on its Horizon model.
What this tells you: a 10x10 is tight around almost any tub. If you want to walk around it, start at 13x13.
Height
- Hanso Pro+ stands 8.2 feet tall (Hanso).
- The Sunjoy hot tub pergola has 7.9 feet of clear space inside (Sunjoy).
Check that against your tub with the cover lifted. Steam also sits under a roof, so think about how much you want it to hold in.
The cheap option, and its catch
Sunjoy's 10x11 wooden hot tub pergola with a privacy wall was $1,222.47 on sale (list price $2,601) when we read the page on Nov 4, 2026. It's the cheapest thing we found for the job.
The catch: Sunjoy lists it at 35 mph, and its manuals say its products aren't built for harsh weather. Anything above a strong thunderstorm gust is outside what the company says it can take. See the ratings page.
The pricier option
The Hanso Pro+ was $3,978 on sale (list $6,120) on Nov 4, 2026. Its listed wind range is 72 to 120 mph and its snow figure 25 pounds per square foot. Those are Hanso's numbers; we found no outside test.
Where to put it
Both makers want a solid base. Hanso says solid, level concrete at least 4 inches thick, or paving, tile on concrete pads, or decking. Sunjoy's manual says wood deck or concrete, not soil, and anchors aren't in the box. If the tub sits on a deck, ask whoever built it whether that deck can carry a roof's posts as well as the tub's weight. We haven't looked into that.
