Which pergolas are rated for coastal wind?
Only Hanso claims anything near hurricane-level wind (up to 120 mph for the Pro+, 165 mph with the roof closed for the Horizon), and those claims come from Hanso alone.
Wind claims, in mph, against hurricane categories
Maker's own claim, no outside test found. Categories from the National Hurricane Center. Numbered boxes are hurricane categories 1 to 5.
First, learn to read a wind number
- Gust or steady wind? A steady wind and a 3-second gust are different numbers. The pages we read don't say which they mean.
- Roof open or closed? Hanso's Horizon is 165 mph closed and 120 mph open. An open roof lets air through.
- Installed how? A rating assumes the maker's anchoring. Skip the anchors and the number means nothing.
What the numbers mean in storm terms
Hurricane categories use steady wind. From the National Hurricane Center (source):
| Category | Steady wind |
|---|---|
| 1 | 74 to 95 mph |
| 3 | 111 to 129 mph |
| 4 | 130 to 156 mph |
| 5 | 157 mph or more |
So the Hanso Pro+ top number (120 mph) falls in Category 3 territory. The Sunjoy gazebos at 50 mph and the hot tub pergola at 35 mph sit below hurricane strength altogether. Sunjoy's manuals also say its products aren't made for high winds.
What we'd tell a friend on the coast
- If your area gets hurricanes, 50 mph is a rainstorm number. Don't put a Sunjoy hardtop out there and expect it to survive.
- Hanso's are the only numbers high enough to talk about. The Horizon is also the priciest of the ones we've read: $4,867 on sale (list $7,488) on Nov 4, 2026.
- Hanso says it has a public 49-page report behind its ratings. We could not find it. Until we do, treat the Horizon's number as a claim. Ask Hanso for the report before you spend the money.
- The Hanso Apex was left out because Hanso's own pages disagree about its ratings. See the ratings page.

The ASCE 7 Hazard Tool at ascehazardtool.org gives design wind speed for an address. Put in your street address and compare it to the table on the ratings page. Your local building office has the final word on permits and rules.
